The Umuzi Collection is a cultural heritage initiative dedicated to the creation and stewardship of heritage homesteads across Zimbabwe. Our work honours African history, celebrates identity, and creates spaces where culture is lived, shared, and protected with dignity.
We are building a collection of heritage homesteads that blend cultural preservation, community partnership, and thoughtful development — ensuring Zimbabwe’s stories are told by Zimbabweans, in places rooted in the land itself.

Zimbabwe is a land of kings and kingdoms, builders and storytellers, resilience and beauty. Yet much of its cultural history has been fragmented or underrepresented within mainstream narratives.
The Umuzi Collection exists to help restore balance — creating physical spaces where heritage is honoured, cultural knowledge is preserved, and future generations can reconnect with their roots in meaningful ways.
Our homesteads are not replicas of the past. They are living cultural spaces, designed to honour legacy while engaging responsibly with the present.

HALALE HOMESTEAD — MATOPO
Flagship heritage homestead under development
Halale Homestead is a culturally significant heritage homestead located in Matopo, Zimbabwe. It is a flagship site within The Umuzi Collection, developed as part of a broader national heritage vision.
Shaped by the historical era associated with King Mzilikazi and the cultural traditions of the Matopo region, Halale Homestead is envisioned as a living cultural sanctuary — a place where history, identity, and community are honoured with care and integrity. Through architecture, landscape, and cultural practice, the homestead reflects enduring values of leadership, continuity, and collective memory rooted in place.
FURA HOMESTEAD— MASHONALAND
Heritage Homestead Under Development
Fura Homestead is a culturally significant heritage homestead under development in northern Zimbabwe. It forms part of The Umuzi Collection and interprets the legacy of the Mutapa State, one of Southern Africa’s most influential pre-colonial civilisations.
Inspired by traditions of sacred kingship, diplomacy, and long-distance trade, Fura Homestead is envisioned as a living heritage space — one that honours governance, spiritual authority, and Zimbabwe’s deep historical role in regional and global exchange.
THE HALALE HOMESTEAD CONCEPT
Rooted in tradition, guided by responsibility
The homestead is designed using traditional Ndebele architectural principles, blended with thoughtful contemporary design. Cultural authenticity, environmental sustainability, and community involvement guide every stage of development.
Key elements of Halale Homestead include:
- Traditional homestead structures inspired by Ndebele design
- Communal gathering spaces and central firepit
- Cultural and ceremonial areas
- Learning, workshop, and storytelling spaces
- A curated cultural museum dedicated to King Mzilikazi
- Environmentally responsible, solar-powered infrastructure
COMMUNITY & CULTURAL INTEGRITY
Working in partnership
Halale Homestead is being developed in collaboration with local communities, traditional leaders, artisans, and cultural practitioners. The project prioritises local employment, skills development, and shared custodianship.
The intention is to ensure that heritage is preserved not as a static display, but as a living, community-led practice that benefits the people connected to the land.

The Umuzi Collection was born from a deep desire to help restore pride in who we are and where we come from. To create spaces where our heritage is honoured with care, elegance, and truth — and where future generations can reconnect with their roots.
Our heritage homesteads are not simply destinations. They are places of learning, gathering, and healing. Places where culture is lived and shared, and where communities are partners, not spectators.
This work is deeply personal to me. It is about legacy — for our children, our communities, and our country. It is about reclaiming our stories and presenting them with the dignity they deserve.
